Pine Ridge Cemetery
James St. Park
South Daytona, Volusia Co., Fla.
On May 3, 1899 Thomas and Martha Johnson deeded
to the Pine Ridge African American Cemetery Association trustee's the land
in South Daytona for the cemetery.
This was a black cemetery in South Daytona and when the association failed to
maintain it the site fell into disrepair. On June 13, 1966 the City Council
adopted a
resolution that it was abandoned and became property of the City of South
Daytona as designated park land.
There were no headstones left due to weathering and vandalism so the burials are
unmarked and there is a possibility some of the persons could have been
disinterred and moved to a different cemetery.
The city placed a monument recognizing the cemetery in 2007.
Greg Bartholomew provided the following information on the Significance of the resource and message on the plaque.
Resource Description
The historic condition of the
resource is that the cemetery was failed to be maintained and those interested
in its use have failed to keep and preserve it as a resting place for the dead
and permitted it to be thrown to the commons; that the graves have worn away,
grave stones and monuments have been destroyed so the graves have lost their
identity; that said cemetery has been mistreated or neglected so as to entirely
lose its identity as a graveyard and is no longer known, recognized and
respected by the public as a cemetery. It was therefore declared abandoned on
June 12, 1966 by Resolution 66-112 of the City of South Daytona.
The current physical condition of the property is a public park with a range of
facilities for recreation. Those facilities include racquetball courts, tennis
court, baseball fields and a youth recreation center. The property is owned and
maintained by the City of South Daytona.
Statement of Significance
The significance of this
resource is that it was a cemetery where sons and daughters of freed slaves were
buried as they worked in the Town of Blake planting orange groves, constructing
the Flagler Railroad around 1892 from Daytona Beach to New Smyrna Beach
(currently the FEC RR) and as domestic workers for the citizens of the Town of
Blake.
The Town of Blake had a train depot that was heavily used to ship citrus and
other products out of the area. The Town of Blake was recognized and had its own
official post office and in 1951 the Town of Blake was incorporated as the City
of South Daytona.
Also, one of the trustees of the Pine Ridge African American Cemetery was T. W.
Gooden, who signed the proclamation for the incorporation of Daytona Beach.
The Town of Blake became the City of South Daytona in 1951.
The Town of Blake was known for shipping citrus and other products out of the
area from its train depot.
The Town of Blake also had its own post office at the time.

Town of Blake
Located near this site is the Pine Ridge African American Cemetery where
the sons and daughters of freed slaves who helped construct the FEC railway,
planted orange groves, and were domestic workers for the residents of the Town
of Blake were buried. The burial grounds were lost in the 1920’s when the graves
had worn away and the grave stones and monuments had been destroyed and lost
their identity. In 1966 the City of South Daytona declared the cemetery
abandoned and no longer respected by the public as a cemetery.
The names are from the Bingham and Maley
(Baggett & Summers) 1901 thru 1921 Funeral Home records John Woodard found in
the Daytona Library, They were just card files and not the record itself so not
much information was on the cards.
