Spruce Creek Cemetery
Port Orange, Volusia Co., Fla.
This cemetery is located in the community of Spruce
Creek Fly-in that was built on the World War II airport built by the Navy to train pilots
for World War II. The cemetery existed long before the airport was built and has Civil War
Soldiers buried there but their headstones were destroyed and are unmarked.
A nice archway was donated and built by the Johns family at the entrance in 1985 in memory
of Curtis James Johns who passed away at the early age of 21, I had the pleasure of
meeting Libby and Tim Johns and Melody Johns Whitesides the day I visited the cemetery as
they were participating in the annual cleanup, The cemetery is well taken care of.
On April 13, 1999 I had a conversation with Mr. Ernest S. Jackson who's father was the
care taker of the cemetery for a few years, He stated the land was owned by a Mr.
Nippert the son in law of Mrs. O. J. Gamble of the Proctor and Gamble Soap
Company. He also stated that Jim and Sally Jackson also a sister stillborn around 1910 to
1920 are buried there without a headstone.
