Grace Mann Bell, born in 1880, was the daughter of prominent 19th century Florida politician Austin Mann, and sister to May Mann Jennings, wife of Florida Governor Sherman Jennings and a political activist in her own right. Prior to her marriage in 1910, Grace served as her brother-in-laws stenographer, and was praised for her knowledge of the law. Around the turn of the 20th century, Grace sought admission to the Florida Bar, but due to the unwillingness of the all-male organization to accept females to their ranks, she was not admitted. Her daughter said it was something that disappointed her for the rest of her life. She lived in Springfield and Atlantic Beach, passed away in 1962 and is buried in Jacksonville Beach. Jennings, age 6, born November 1893 in Florida; and Grace M Man, sister-in-law, age 21, born February 1879 in Florida to a father from Ohio and a mother from Pennsylvania, a stenographer.
She appears in the 1910 Federal Census of Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida, still living with her sister and brother in law and their two children.
She married John Murrell Bell and in 1914, they appear in the Jacksonville City Directory, living at 3338 Silver Street.
She appears in the 1920 Federal Census of Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, living with her husband and children. The household included: John M. Bell, age 32, born in Florida to parents from Florida, an oil leaser; Grace, age 40; Elizabeth, age 9, born in Florida; James, age 2, born in Florida; and Grace, age 6, born in Florida.
She appears in the 1930 Federal Census of Atlantic Beach, Duval County, Florida, living in a home they owned, valued at $8000, on 6th Street with her husband and children. The household included: John M. Bell, age 42, born in Florida, a real estate agent; Grace M, age 43; Grace J., age 16; Jane B., age 13; and John M, Jr., age 8, born in Texas.
She appears in the 1935 Florida State Census of Neptune Beach, Duval County, Florida as a widow who owns a real estate office. Her children Jane, age 18 and John, age 13, are living with her.
