A Prayer Warrior is Home
Posted: Sunday, December 21, 2014 6:00 am
Bessie Newsome Kennedy answered God's call again to come to him on Dec. 20, 2014 , at her home surrounded by those she loved. The first time she heard His call was to accept His Son, Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and Lord. This time, her mansion was complete and she was ready to see Him face to face.
On her welcoming committee in Glory were her parents, Allen C. and Bessie Davis Newsome; her husband, Leonard Kennedy; her son-in-law, the Rev. Donald L Etheridge; her brothers and their spouses, Clayton Newsome, Thomas and Dorothy Newsome, Charles and Madelyn Newsome, and her brother-in-law J.P. (Jimmy) Humphries. They are on her welcoming committee because they, too, were redeemed by The Lamb.
Born Dec. 29, 1927, she was the baby child of Allen and Bessie Newsome. She often said she was especially blessed because she was the seventh child of the seventh child. Growing up in Conway, her family was farmers and she learned to appreciate God's beautiful Earth. She accepted Christ as her savior, served Him diligently and prayed fervently as a warrior for Christ. She taught Sunday school, worked with mission groups and served in several capacities within The Church.
Mrs. Kennedy worked for many years in the old Roanoke Rapids Hospital and later in private duty patient care.
She loved and prayed for her family, training her children, grandchildren and her great-grandchildren, in the fear and admonition of The Lord. Those left to cherish precious memories as a daughter, Ethel Caroline Etheridge; a son, Leonard Clark Kennedy, and his wife Rhonda; a very dear sister, Tivie Humphries Medlin; three grandchildren; Edward Marshall and his wife Stacy of Washington, D.C.; Thomas Marshall, and his wife Jamie of Roanoke Rapids; and Corie E. Kennedy also of Roanoke Rapids; also six great-grandchildren, Tony Marshall, Michael Marshall, Charlie Marshall, Victoria Marshall, Eli Marshall and Gabe Marshall.
The family also wishes to thank Elizabeth Ballero, Mae Pearson, Ann Anderson and Megan Jarratt. They will always be appreciated and considered a part of the family because of the loving care and compassion they showed to Mrs. Kennedy. Mrs. Kennedy also loved and prayed for her church family at Maranatha Baptist Church. It was her desire that no one should perish without Christ.
Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service are handling arrangements, where the family will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014. Pastor Michael D. Little will officiate services at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, at Maranatha Baptist Church on Zoo Road.
Interment will follow at the Davis Family Cemetery in Conway.
Although "Mrs. Bessie" loved God's Creation, she loved his church and its ministry more. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to: Maranatha Baptist Church, 595 Zoo Road North, Roanoke Rapids NC 27870.

Thurmonds Partisan Rangers and Swanns Battalion of Virginia Cavalry, Virginia Regimental History Series, by Jeffrey C. Weaver, H. E. Howard Publishing, 1993.
Thurmonds Partisan Rangers were raised for the Confederate service primarily from Fayette, Greenbrier, and Monroe counties during the spring and summer of 1862. The two companies were commanded by brothers William D. and Philip J. Thurmond of Fayette County. As other companies of rangers formed in southern West Virginia and western Virginia, these companies joined and became a battalion variously known as Thurmonds, Morriss, and Houndshells. An estimated 650 men served with this larger unit during the war, which in late 1863 became 44th Virginia Cavalry Battalion and part of the regular army.
The mountaineers who comprised Thurmonds Rangers knew that this type of semi-independent service would allow them to remain near their homes and families. Considered by some to be nothing more than bushwhackers, partisan rangers assisted the Confederacy as scouts, spies, and raiders. They were feared and respected in this capacity. On October 26, 1864, Capt. Philip Thurmond was killed in action at Winfield, Putnam County. A postwar surveyor, coal operator, and land agent, Capt. William D. Thurmond founded the New River Gorge town of Thurmond in the 1880s. He died at age 89 on May 14, 1910.
The Raleigh Herald, Beckley, West Virginia
Thursday, May 19, 1910, page 1
Captain William Thurmond died Saturday at his home at Minden, Fayette County. Infirmities incident to his advanced age were the cause of death. For several months Captain Thurmond had been ill, and for a week past he was in such condition that not even his most anxious relatives expected his recovery.
Captain Thurmond was the man for which the little city of Thurmond was named. Throughout the lower portion of the state he was known through his business connections. He was a banker, having been president of the Bank of Thurmond and owning about half its stock and was also a heavy stockholder in one of the local banking institutions. On his properties in and about Thurmond are the Minden coal operations from which he has for many year[s] derived large returns. His fortune was estimated at about one million dollars.
Two sons, Charles and Joe Thurmond, both of Thurmond; Mrs Ford and Mrs J W W Harvey, of Oak Hill, survive Captain Thurmond. His wife died about two years ago.
Captain Thurmond was the uncle of Mesdames: Earwood, D L Rodes and Mr Bibb of this city.
Had Captain Thurmond lived 'till November he would have attained the age of 90 years.
The title of captain was obtained by the citizen during the civil war. H was conspicuous in the settlement of the New River district, both before and after the war. He was famed throughout his community as a horseman and even after he almost entirely lost his eyesight, he prided himself on being able to ride the most fractious horse.
