Gertrude Walker
(October 17, 1916 - August 11, 2010)
Gertrude Walker, 93, a long time resident of Waycross, died Wednesday after a short illness. She was the widow of Bertrand M. (Buck) Walker of Blackshear, who died in 1969.
She is survived by her three children, Carole Newson-Smith of Hayward, California, Wendy Walker, and Chris Walker of Waycross, her brother Fred Walker of Waycross, nieces and nephews Les Walker of Waycross, Julie Walker Protiva of Atlanta, Dan Walker of Abingdon, Maryland, David James and Jeremy James of Bloomington, Indiana, Sue Newson-Smith Reiss of London, England, Jane Newson-Smith Hall and Peter Frank Newson-Smith of Dorset, England, John Morrison of Oxfordshire, England, Jenny Morrison Daniel and Peter Woodruff of Wiltshire, England. She was predeceased by her infant son, Clinton Lester Walker and sister, Polly Walker James.
Mrs. Walker, daughter of Irene Smith and Frederick Lester Walker, both deceased, was born in Patterson in 1916, was a gifted pianist from early childhood, earning her degree from Jacksonville College of Music, the first female in her family to achieve this level of education. Afterward she lived in Brooklyn, New York and worked for a time in the souvenir shop at the top floor of the Empire State Building, where she met her first husband, Peter Newson-Smith. They married at Grace Episcopal Church on the Sunday that England declared war on Germany Sept. 3, 1939. She then lived in London, England, and as her father in law was Lord Mayor of London, she lived with the family in the Mansion House while her husband was an officer in the Honorable Artillery Corps. During that time she met many dignitaries, including then Princess Elizabeth, and Sir Winston Churchill. She worked for some time in the U.S. Army headquarters on General Eisenhower's staff where one of her duties was to transcribe his private diaries. Shortly after her husband's death on July 7, 1944 she returned to Patterson with their infant daughter. Captain Newson-Smith is buried in a British war cemetery near Foiana del Chiana, Italy.
In 1948 she married Buck Walker who was the Chevrolet dealer in Baxley. Soon after, they moved to Waycross, where Buck became co-owner with his uncle of the R.L. Walker Chevrolet Company. After moving to Waycross they were members of First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School classes. She was a member of the Junior League and was a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts. The WACT played a major role in her later life. She played piano for many musicals as well as performing in their first production and many thereafter. She was on their original board of directors and found great joy in participating with and encouraging the theatrical community throughout the years.
Although she was born with a gift for music, it was her ear for others that set her apart. She had a genuine interest in people from all walks of life. And, it was her zest for life, her sense of humor, and love for her family and friends for which she would want to be remembered. She will be missed by all of us who love her so dearly. The family will receive friends at Miles Odum Funeral Home on Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Sunday at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Satilla, 317 Plant Ave., Waycross, Georgia 31501, or the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas, 75231.
