A longtime Port Richmond restaurateur, Josephine Bottiglieri dies at 86
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Port Richmond native Josephine Bottiglieri, 86, a beloved sister and aunt who was like a mother to her siblings, nieces and nephews, died Wednesday in the Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Dongan Hills.
Born Josephine Savastano, she lived most of her life in Port Richmond before retiring and moving to Grasmere in 1999. She had lived in Carmel Richmond since 2007.
Mrs. Bottiglieri grew up across the street from Gene's Restaurant, one of Staten Island's oldest restaurants, which she operated with her late husband, Gene, from 1964 until 1996. It closed in 1997. They took the restaurant over from her father in law, also Gene, who had run it since 1936.
"Mrs. B.," as she was known by her staff, was the co-owner and bookkeeper of the restaurant. Gene's was in business for more than 61 years. Many of its signature dishes were her creation, one of which was the Chicken Parmigiana White, which was made with wine instead of tomato sauce.
Mrs. Bottiglieri and her husband enjoyed eating in the finest restaurants in New York City on the days their restaurant was closed. She also had a passion for travel, usually leaving the country several times each year.
Although she never cooked in the restaurant, she was the head chef in her own kitchen. For many years she was the sole cook for every holiday and entertained more than 25 people for holidays routinely.
She enjoyed Atlantic City and spending summers at the Jersey Shore, where she owned a summer residence.
Mrs. Bottiglieri was known to shop six days a week. She often bought clothing for everyone in her family, even buying things that didn't fit anyone in her family, knowing someday someone would need it.
"She had a heart of gold," said her nephew, Peter E. Montanti,'' noting that she called him the apple of her eye. "She was the most generous person I knew, always finding good in a person and never having a bad thing to say about someone -- a true peacemaker.''
She always had a special spot in her heart for the clergy, especially the Daughters of Divine Charity, The Carmelite Sisters and priests of her parish, Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, New Dorp.
Her husband, Gene, died 1996. Mrs. Bottiglieri is survived by her sisters, Marie Licata and Rosemary Montanti; a brother, Anthony Savastano, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
