Matéo is a son of Bartolome Antonio and María del Carmen Crespo Solana. According to the Saint Augustine Genealogical Society, the old records of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Augustine give his birth is October 20, 1829. The Archives Department of the Diocese of Saint Augustine confirms his birth date and that he was christened on Saturday, February 27, 1830. He was named after his paternal uncle Crespin Matéo Solana. After his parents died, his mother in 1831 and his father in 1839, he was raised by his uncle.
The Territory of Florida received statehood on March 3, 1845. Matéo worked as a farmer, and married Mary Ketus Masters on April 8, 1850, in Saint Augustine. They have three children: 1 boy and 2 girls.
Florida had barely moved on from the Third Seminole War, 1855 to 1858, when tensions with the Northern States led to the South succeeding from the Union. Florida succeeded on January 10, 1861, and became a founding member of the new Confederate States of America on February 8, 1861.
Matéo, also known as Matthew, enlisted into Captain Stephens' Independent Cavalry, also called the St Johns Rangers, on March 3, 1862, in Volusia County, Florida. Private Solana was described as 5-feet 7-inches tall, with a dark complexion, black hair, and black eyes. He received a discharge for disability on August 9, 1862, approved by Brigadier General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, at Camp Finegan. Afterwards, he returned to his farm in Saint Johns County.
"Mateo Solana, home on furlough at the end of the Civil War, was visited one night by a Union General. The General ordered Mateo to be ready the next morning to help drive cattle to Jacksonville. Mateo was very argumentative and angered the General who made several threats. Mr. Durrance and Mr. Carter stepped in and convinced Mateo to cooperate. When Mateo arrived the next morning at the pens, he saw several of his own cattle. He requested the return of his cattle, but to no avail. During the drive to Jacksonville, Mateo deliberately slowed his progress and further provoked the General. The General threatened sending him to Hilton Head as prisoner of war, but again Mr. Carter and Mr. Durrance interceded on his behalf. At the end of the drive, Mateo returned home to his motherless children Louisa, Mathilda, and DeNecia." (Solana Memories: A Collection of Family Traditions, written by Linda Barber and Merilin Solana MacGibbon, illustrated by Lester Solana; page unknown)
Following the death of his wife in March 1864, Matthew married Sarah Bourn on October 25, 1865, in Florida. They have eight children: 5 boys and 3 girls. They moved their family to Putnam County, Florida, sometime before 1880. Matthew received a military pension due to old age and loss of eyesight.
