COL. E. L. WALKER KILLED NEAR BLACKSHEAR ACCIDENTALLY
DEATH HAS CAST GLOOM OVER ENTIRE SECTION
SHOT GUN IN HANDS OF BEN DIXON FIRED ACCIDENTALLY, LOAD ENTERING COL. WALKER'S HEAD NEAR RIGHT EAR -- FUNERAL AT PATTERSON THIS AFTERNOON LARGELY ATTENDED.
By C. F. Andrews
Blackshear, Ga., Dec. 18 -- Col. E. Lawton Walker, solicitor general-elect of the Brunswick Circuit, was accidentally killed Thursday afternoon by Mr. Ben Dixon, a well know Pierce county farmer, about eight miles north of Blackshear. As a result of an accident that has removed one of Blackshear's best citizens and one of the most popular men of this entire section a deep gloom has settled over Blackshear. Mr. Dickson's [sic] heart rending anguish is pitiful, and he declares with the fervor of a life-long friend that he would rather his own life had been taken than that of Col. Walker. He is completely torn up by the sad accident, and can hardly talk about it.
In company with quite a party from Blackshear Col. Walker spent most of Thursday at a turkey shoot at Walkersville, about eight miles north of Blackshear. Col. Walker carried Mr. Ben Dixon and Mr. Lem Dickson to Walkersville in his own buggy, and was never in a more jovial mood. At the turkey shoot he was continually joking with those around him, and several times cautioned the men about keeping their guns elevated so as to avoid accident.
About three o'clock the party at Walkersville dispersed. Col. Walker, accompanied by Mr. Ben Dixon, Mr. Lem Dixon and his cousin, Willie Walker, came towards Blackshear hunting birds. They had flushed one covey of partridges and were after a second at the time of the accidental shooting. Mr. Ben Dixon was backing up Col. Walker, and Mr. Lem Dixon, Willie Walker. Col. Walker had his gun ready to fire at a partridge when the bird flew to his left. Mr. Ben Dixon was waiting for Col. Walker to shoot, and, seeing the bird going to Col. Walker's left, made ready to fire. In some inexplainable manner one load of his double barreled shot gun fired, the load entering Col. Walker's head above and below the right ear. This happened at 3:35 o'clock, and death relieved the stricken man about twenty minutes later.
Mr. Ben Dixon was standing about fifteen steps behind Col. Walker at the time of the accident.
Will Walker and the others rushed up to where Col. Walker fell, turning him over and trying to ease him as much as possible. Will was with Col. Walker until he expired, and states that beyond a moan or two when he first fell, Col. Walker made no sound.
The body was brought to Blackshear at seven o'clock, having been first carried to a house near the scene of the shooting.
Col. Walker is survived by a wife, who was Miss Minnie McGee before marriage, and three children, two sons and a daughter. Five sisters and four brothers survive him, Mrs. Peterson of Douglas, Mrs. J. M. R. Griffis, Mrs. Dr. O'Quinn, Miss Annie Walker all of Patterson, and Mrs. Donaldson of Jesup; Col. Randall J. Walker of Valdosta, Ormer, Reppard, and Lester Walker of Patterson. His parents Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Walker of Patterson also survive him.
He was forty-one years old and has served several terms as member of the Georgia Legislature from Pierce county, also as senator of the Third District. He was a member of the law firm of Estes & Walker. Col. A. B. Estes being his partner. He was born and reared in Pierce county, and would have succeeded Col. John W. Bennett as solicitor general of the Brunswick Circuit on January first. Until two weeks ago deceased was a member of the Waycross Lodge number 97, I.O.O.F. He had his membership transferred to the Blackshear [sic] and a member of the Knights of Pythias. These lodges attended his funeral at Patterson this afternoon. Rev. Thomas Minchew of Ware county conducted the funeral, the interment being at the family burial ground at Patterson.
A special train was operated from Waycross and Blackshear to Patterson this afternoon on account of the funeral of Col. Walker, and many of his friends attended from Waycross.
