A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 11, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Theodore E. "Ted" Johnson, Sr., 91, who passed away June 4, 2012 in Port Orange, FL.
Fr. Matthew Higginbotham, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, will officiate for the services. The family requests visiting hours Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. A rosary will be recited Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
He was born in Port Orange, FL on March 12, 1921. Ted is a descendent of Edward and Rose (Barber) McDonald and Miles and Matilda (Crawford) Lastinger, whose families arrived in Florida in the early 1840's and were some of the first residents and pioneers of the Port Orange area. His grandparents were William and Mary Elizabeth (McDonald) Johnson. He and his wife lived in Crowley from 1968 to 2009.
He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the 101st and later the 511th Airborne Paratroopers and due to his combat record he was chosen to one of the elite honor guards that accompanied General MacArthur to the peace treaty signing on the USS Missouri. Mr. Johnson loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. He and his son, Glenn built their own shrimp boat. Mr. Johnson was a retired plasterer and commercial fisherman.
Mr. Johnson is survived by one daughter, Charlotte Johnson Boyd of Port Orange, FL; one son, Ted E. Johnson, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn H. Johnson of Crowley; five grandchildren, Michelle Boyd LaPlant, Theresa Boyd Hatcher, Lisa Boyd DelManzano, Justin Johnson and Crystal Morgan Sibley; seven great-grandchildren, Meagan and Josh Hatcher, Erin, Donnelly, Jade, Emily and Tristan DelManzano and Chloe Sibley.
He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty two years, Gladys Josephine Trahan Johnson; one son, Glenn Martin Johnson; his parents, Otis and Hattie (Lastinger) Johnson; brother, Myron Johnson; three sisters, Mary Louise Johnson, Lillie Johnson Stevens and Geneva Johnson Miro.
