[1293] Confederate Captain Philip J. Thurmond of Virginia was killed in battle at Winfield on 26 Oct 1864. He was buried in a temporary grave on the edge of town. His family never came after the War to claim his body. A movement started to give him a decent burial as his remains had started slipping toward the Kanawha River backwaters area. On 30 Oct 2010, hundreds of Civil War buffs came to Winfield, West Virginia to participate in the reburial of Capt. Thurmond. It was 146 years after his death. He was buried beside the Historic Hoge House, located behind the Putnam County Courthouse. The James E. Marshall American Legion Post # 187 of Winfield, West Virginia was asked to participate in the events.
