James Barnard settled in GA sometime shortly after 1800. Little is known about him other than he was from Massachusetts. Recent DNA testing links his descendants with a group of Barnard's who arrived in America in 1634.
We are not sure how closely he is related to the Barnard's who settled in Savannah.
He married Nancy Susannah Reeves who was supposedly born in South Carolina.
Several family trees on Ancestry.com have claimed to know the parents of James Barnard, but none of them offer any proof, nor can they give correct sources.
James Barnard's memorial has been placed in this cemetery, even though there are no marked graves to prove it.
James and Nancy had the following children:
Mary Ann Barnard b 1809, married Samuel D Smith
Sarah Ann Barnard 1813-1893, married Joseph DeLoach
Elizabeth Isabelle Barnard 1816- after 1880, married Isaac DeLoach ( brother to Joseph )
Daniel Barnard 1818-1896 , married Harriet Juilanne Bacon
Asa Barnard , 1824-1895, married Hannah Todd
The following info was provided to me, but I do not know by whom. Therefore I can not give him proper credit
James Barnard was born about 1767( 1787??) in Massachusetts. Some compiled sources indicate that he was born at Lynn in Essex County,
but no evidence proving this claim has been seen. His parents and ancestry remain unknown at this time.
The earliest known record of James Barnard in Georgia is his appearance on the 1806 Liberty County Tax Digest.
He was living in the Canoochee District at that time. James entered the 1807 Georgia Land Lottery from Liberty County
as an unmarried man and was allowed one draw. He also took title to a 200 acre land grant in Liberty County in 1807.
James Barnard was married about 1808, probably in Liberty County, Georgia. This compiler has seen no evidence which would
identify her, but compiled sources indicate that she was Nancy Reeves. There were no Reeves families living in Liberty County in 1808, so this identification has become problematic.
The Canoochee District of Liberty County was cut out into Tattnall County in 1811. Therefore, at that time the Barnard
homestead became part of Tattnall County. The James Barnard family became residents of Tattnall County without moving.
In 1818 James Barnard became embroiled in lawsuit over a debt of $205.72 he had borrowed from with John R. Warner of
Savannah. The case received a jury trial but Barnard lost and was ordered to pay back the priniciple and costs.
Barnard appealed but lost again. The lawsuit drug on for several years.
Also in 1818 James Barnard was granted a liquor license in Tattnall County, receiving permission to sell
alcohol from his home near the Canoochee River.
James Barnard was last known living on 8 October 1827 when the Inferior Court of Tattnall County
granted him permission to defer any further jury duty. At that time he claimed to be over 60 years of age.
His exact date of death and burial site are unknown at this time. His widow was last known living in 1830.
