John Massey Bryant was born in Georgia on November 22, 1822. He was the son of Langley Bryant, Jr. and Elizabeth (Silbert) Bryant.
Bryant married Miriam Osteen on February 28, 1842. She was the daughter of John David O'Steen and Martha Jane Parrish. She was born November 13, 1826 in Florida.
In 1850 the Bryants resided in Calhoun County, Florida.
In 1860 the Bryant family resided in Archer, Alachua County, Florida. Bryant, age 37, was a farmer and he had real estate valued at $800. His wife Miriam 27, Rissan 15, John W., 14 Martha A. 8, Ozias 7, Alexander 5, Mary 4, Jackson 3, and Simeon age 1, resided on the family farm.
His brothers, Thomas, served as a Private with Company I, 1st Reserves Florida and Co. G, 2nd Florida Cavalry and on April 1862 Joseph Bryant enlisted as a Private in Company B, 5th Florida Regiment, Captain Vinzant's Company in Lake City, Columbia County, Florida, Confederate States of America.
On January 10, 1861 Florida seceded from the Union and the Army of the Confederate States was formed.
Bryant enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company H, 8th Infantry Regiment Florida, Confederate States of America.
The 8th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Lake City, Florida, during the summer of 1862. The unit was soon ordered to Virginia with a force of 950 men, and brigaded under Generals Pryor, E.A. Perry, and Finegan.
It was prominent in numerous battles from Second Manassas to Cold Harbor, endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches south of the James River, and fought in various conflicts around Appomattox. The regiment reported 7 killed, 37 wounded, and 44 missing at Fredericksburg, had 11 killed and 28 wounded at Chancellorsville, and lost fifty-nine percent of the 176 engaged at Gettysburg. Only 4 officers and 28 men surrendered with the Army of Northern Virginia. The field officers were Colonels Richard F. Floyd and David Lang, Lieutenant Colonels William Baya and John M. Pons, and Majors Thomas E. Clarke and William J. Turner.
In 1880 the Bryants resided in Polk County, Florida. By 1900 Bryant resided with his grandson, James Bryant (born in 1869) in Precinct No. 5, Polk County, Florida. James was employed as a merchant.
Mrs. Bryant died January 16, 1902. She was laid to rest at Socrum Cemetery, at Bethel Baptist Church, in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida. The cemetery is one of the county's oldest cemeteries located 10 miles north of Lakeland on State Road 35A.
Bryant died October 21, 1912 and was laid to rest at Socrum Cemetery.
