LONGTIME CIVIC LEADER THOMAS J. WETHERELL DIES
Thomas James Wetherell, a longtime civic leader and father of former state Rep. T. K. Wetherell, died after a stroke Friday at Halifax Medical Center.
He was 84.
A lifelong resident of the Daytona Beach area, Wetherell was born in Holly Hill on Feb. 16, 1912.
His grandparents arrived here in 1876 from Philadelphia on a boat that was heading for Miami. It stopped here instead when it ran into a tropical storm. The family had traveled to this country by schooner from Durham, England, only a couple of years earlier.
His father Thomas Wetherell was involved in many of the ''firsts'' in the area including helping build the Ponce de Leon Lighthouse.
Thomas J. Wetherell also left his mark on the area. During his lifetime, he served on many community and civic boards.
''He was one of a group of people who passed through Daytona Beach and made it a better place,'' said Bill France Jr., NASCAR president and chairman of the International Speedway Corp.
William J. Wetherell said his father was most proud of his community service.
T.K. Wetherell, currently president of Tallahassee Community College, said he thinks his father would like to be remembered best for his efforts in helping the community grow. He said his father also was proud of recent community efforts to restore the Halifax River to the condition it was before unrestrained growth overtook the area.
During his lifetime, the elder Wetherell served as president of several community organizations including the Salvation Army Board of Directors, the Daytona Beach YMCA Board of Directors, and the Daytona Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
He was instrumental in luring Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University here and served as chairman of its board of visitors.
He also was a former member of the board of directors at Daytona Beach Community College and help formed the DBCC Foundation. A building at the college is named for the family.
The elder Wetherell furthermore was a member of the board of counselors at Bethune-Cookman College.
William J. Wetherell said his father was especially pleased with his involvement at B-CC and also with the Richard V. Moore Community Center. ''He was close to both Mrs. Bethune and Dr. Moore,'' the son said, referring to the college's founder Mary McLeod Bethune and Moore, who served as B-CC president for many years.
In the business arena, the elder Wetherell spent about 40 years working as an executive for the Sears, Roebuck and Co., starting in 1934 with the company store on downtown Beach Street. He worked in company stores in several other states before returning to Daytona Beach in 1952. He retired from Sears shortly before the store moved to Volusia Mall.
Between 1943 and 1945, Wetherell served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
In 1955 Wetherell and attorney Thomas Cobb purchased the old Ormond Hotel. They sold it in 1979.
Wetherell's wife Mildred died in 1991. At that time, the family established a scholarship fund at the University of Central Florida campus in Daytona Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family now is suggesting donations be made to that fund, according to William J. Wetherell.
Besides sons William J. Wetherell, of South Daytona, and T.K. Wetherell of Lamont, survivors include three grandchildren.
