Berrien H. Becks, Jr. "Hank" age 72, died peacefully on June 3, 2021 at home. Hank was born in Deland, Florida on September 17, 1948 to Berrien H. Becks and Colleen Becks. At that time, his dad was in Stetson Law School in Deland. As a young man, he decided he wanted to follow in his dad's footsteps and become a lawyer. He set out to achieve that goal with the same drive and determination that was consistent in all aspects of his life. He skipped his senior year at Mainland High School and enrolled at Stetson where he skipped his senior year and was accepted by Stetson Law School. He attended classes year-round to accelerate his graduation. He graduated first in his class and joined the Volusia County Bar Association in May of 1970 (he recently marked his 50th year as a member). He immediately joined his father's law practice with its new name, Becks & Becks. While practicing family law and after serving as a judge, Hank started the Daytona Flea & Farmer's Market in March of 1981. The idea for the market was the product of a car ride to dinner with some out-of-town family. Driving past land that he owned, the simple comment "Boy, that would be a great place for a flea market" set a plan into motion that would help to shorten his career in law and provide him with the means to pursue his life interests. Not traditionally a risk taker, Hank was encouraged by his father to jump into this new endeavor not knowing the outcome. It is still a local landmark today. He was always humbled by its success and appreciated the family members, vendors, employees and shoppers that made it successful. He was very proud of his son, Michael, for taking over the reins in 2014 and continuing the family business. Throughout his career, he was always involved in all aspects of other family investments, from development to administration. He was a caring employer that made sure to let his employees know they were appreciated. He had a passion for the outdoors and had a second home in Jackson Hole, WY where he would spend months there in the summers and winters enjoying skiing, hiking and cycling. He never skipped an opportunity to get out and exercise while enjoying the outdoors. He was passionate about landscape and often meticulous on the manicuring of it. If he wasn't walking a property he was involved in, you could find him doing yoga or crossword puzzles at his desk while listening to classical music. No matter where he was, on any given day, you could always count on the fact that he was speaking with his father at 9 a.m. to check on the family and discuss business. They had a special bond. He loved his family and everyone that was a part of it. His first wife, Patty, was a constant part of his life that was always there to keep him up to date on all the children and grandchildren's life events. He fortunately found his forever companion, Kathleen, whom he married after a generous courtship. He was a great brother that cared for his sisters more than they knew. He was a great father and grandfather that was sure to show his family he was genuinely invested in them and their lives. His wife, Kathleen, who he often mentioned to others was a Godsend in his life, was by his side when he passed after sharing many memorable years together. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Salvation Army.
The Funeral Service was held privately at the request of the Becks Family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Becks; his son, Michael Becks (Amy); his daughter, Lori Becks (Luke); his grandchildren, Marlie Robinson, Brady Robinson, Macy Robinson, and Berrien A. Becks; his sisters, Connie Schnebly (John) and Jennifer Becks; and his half-sisters, Angel Reed (Mitch) and Kimberly Becks Murray (Casey).
