Mr. Strickler served an apprenticeship as Pipefitter at the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he later was elevated to positions as Shop Planner, Supervisor Pipefitter, Planner and Estimator, and finally as Project Manager in the Submarine Type Desk Office. He retired from the shipyard in 1980 with more than thirty years of dedicated service for which he received many awards and citations. George's apprenticeship was interrupted in 1943 when he volunteered in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served with distinction in the CB's in the Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to the shipyard to resume his career.
While at the shipyard he co-developed an estimating system for Firm Fix Pricing Repairs of the U.S. Navy Ships. After his retirement, as a consultant with Harbridge House, he taught this system to shipyard personnel on both east and west coasts and Hawaii. Later, he was recruited by the Rosenblatt Company where his reputation and expertise in Planning and Estimating and Project Management was well known and appreciated. He was employed by Rosenblatt for several years until his final retirement.
He was a life member of B.P.O.E. Lodge #242. He served as Exalted Ruler from 1973-1974. George was the Ritual Coach for many years with much success, winning many trophies. Additional trophies were awarded for bowling and golf, two of his hobbies. George was a gifted singer, who started as a boy soprano in The Church of the Holy Communion Choir and grew up to sing every part. He also sang in several choral groups in Charleston including the Elks Glee Club. He was a dedicated member of The Church of The Holy Communion and served a term on the vestry.
He was the husband of Tena Lemacks Strickler, and surviving, in addition to her, are one daughter, Kay S. Hanna of James Island; one sister, Jeanne S. Cheek of Pine Bluff, AR; one grandson, Ronald E. Hanna, III; several nieces and nephews;
He was preceded in death by his only son, John Hauser Strickler (1948-2004); Buried in Live Oak Cemetery, Walterboro.
George and Tena's daughter, Kay Strickler, married Ronald "Ron" E. Hanna II. They have one son, Ronald E. "Branch" Hanna, III. All three are still living.
