MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF BURGESS
Robert Bolling was born on June 12, 1730, in Bristol Parish, Virginia, to Robert Bolling and Ann Cocke. He was christened in the same parish.
Around 1750, he married his first wife, Martha Banister, the sister of Colonel John Banister of Battersea. After Marthas passing, he married Mary Marshall Tabb in 1758. Mary was the daughter of Colonel Thomas Tabb of Clay Hill, Amelia County, Virginia.
Robert Bolling established his residence at Bollingbrook in Petersburg, Virginia. With his second wife, Mary Marshall Tabb, he had several children:
1. Robert Bolling (born 1759) of Centre Hill, who had multiple marriages: first to Mary Burton Bolling, then to Catharine Stith, followed by Sally Washington, and finally to Anne Dade Stith.
2. Thomas Tabb Bolling (17631810), who married Seignora Peyton.
3. Anne Bolling, who married Dr. John Shore.
4. Frances Bolling, who married John Lemessurier.
5. Marianna Bolling, who died unmarried.
Robert Bolling passed away on February 24, 1775. His widow, Mary Marshall Tabb Bolling, lived until 1814.
Will and Estate
Robert Bolling wrote his will on January 30, 1775, and it was proved in the March Court of 1777. His will outlined provisions for his wife, Mary, lending her the land and plantation where he resided, along with property in Blandford and Petersburg and rents from several warehouses. His son Robert inherited Eatons plantation, land at Squirrel Level, and other tracts, while his son Thomas received multiple estates, including Hardwicks, Mays, Edwardss, and the Long Ordinary in Dinwiddie County.
At the time of Roberts death, his son Thomas was nearly 12 years old and was provided for in terms of education and maintenance. In 1786, Thomas came into possession of several estates, including Hardwicks and the Lower Quarter plantation in Amelia County.
A legal dispute, Bolling v. Bolling and others, decided by the Virginia Court of Appeals on January 29, 1817, provides additional insights into the division of Robert Bollings estate.
Family Background
Mary Marshall Tabb was the daughter of Colonel Thomas Tabb, whose lineage traced back to John Tabb and Martha Hand. Thomas Tabb was married twicefirst to Elizabeth Mayo and later to Rebecca Booker. From his second marriage to Rebecca, he had two children: John Tabb and Mary Marshall Tabb, who became Robert Bollings second wife.
