William Frederick Peshek passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20th, 2014 at Halifax Hospital. He was born in Daytona Beach on July 22, 1934. Known as "Bill" to family and friends, he spent his entire life in Florida, most of it in the Daytona Beach area. Bill graduated from St. Paul's High School in 1953 and joined the military that same year. He spent three years in the Marines, including an assignment in Japan. Bill was an avid naturalist and worked as a guide and animal trainer during the early 60's at one of the first Florida ocean based theme parks, the Sea Zoo, located in South Daytona. Subsequent work with the University of Florida agriculture department and several years as the owner of a garden shop afforded Bill the opportunity to work in the outdoors that he so loved. Bill finished his career as the department manager of the garden shop at K-mart and retired from Wal-Mart as a sales associate after 7 years. Bill was a member of the Basilica of St. Paul Catholic Church, Daytona Beach and the Knights of Columbus and spearheaded several of the St. Paul's High School reunions. Many in the Daytona area will remember him as the friendly bus driver who, for many years, ferried them to the annual Mary Wallis Thanksgiving day dinner. Most recently, Bill demonstrated his knowledge of local history, presenting information about the Sea Zoo, which was documented in a story by the Daytona Beach News Journal. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Violet Peshek, his daughter, Carol Mack and brothers, Kendall, Gordon, and John Peshek. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue; daughter, Janice Grathen of Aiken, SC; daughter Melissa Martinez, of Eustis, Florida; step-daughter, Jen Smith, of Port Orange; step-daughter Abby Lyons of Apex, NC; brother, Guy Peshek (Evelyn Peshek) of South Daytona and three other sisters-in-law; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service took place at 9:00 AM on April 26th at the Basilica of St. Paul, Daytona Beach. In lieu of flowers the family wishes that contributions be made to the Basilica of St. Paul and the Halifax Humane Society in William's memory. Arrangements were under the careful direction of Lohman Funeral Home Daytona Beach. Condolences for the family may be shared at www.lohmanfuneralhomes.com.
