Mrs. Gladys Mae Clifton
Gladys Mae Buckles Clifton, 85, went Home for Christmas on December 23, 2014. She was born and raised in Barberville, Florida, and lived there with her husband, James Floyd Clifton, who preceded her in death. Gladys worked as a meat market butcher and in a sewing factory before becoming the Postmaster of the Barberville Post Office, where she worked for 22 years.
After retiring from the Post Office, she and her older sister operated their own business, Two Sisters Country Quilting, for over 15 years. She lovingly made hundreds of beautiful quilts for her customers from all over the country, including the rich and famous. She also made and donated many quilts for school fundraisers and to charitable organizations, including the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches.
Gladys helped to clear the land and raise money to build the church where she faithfully served as a charter member and church treasurer at Abundant Life Fellowship for over 50 years. She organized Chicken Dinners, Fish Fries, Pie Sales, and made and sold hundreds of jars of homemade jelly to help meet the financial needs of the church. She always encouraged others to lend a hand by telling them, "We're working for the Lord!"
She loved her family and friends and looked for any opportunity to bless them with a pot of chicken and dumplings, a banana pudding, or a couple of coconut cream or lemon meringue pies. She loved to write letters and send loving cards to cheer and uplift others, and she looked forward to the annual reunion of Pierson High Schools Class of 1947. She would spend hours on the phone in the evening visiting with friends and family that were dear to her. She enjoyed planting and growing a garden, shelling peas, cooking, canning, and even doing a little fishing when she had time.Gladys spent her last years at The Sarah House in Ormond Beach, where she loved and appreciated her caregivers, fellow residents, and their families who became her extended family.
Gladys is survived by her two younger sisters, Lucille Byrd of Perry, Georgia, and Nancy (Cleave) Roya of Barberville; her daughters, Carol Justice of Riverview and Eunice Turner of Barberville; her granddaughters, Mandi Turner and Ashley Justice; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Online condolences may be made at www.allensummerhillfuneralhome.com.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 28th from 2-4pm at the Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home in DeLand. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 29th at 11am at the Abundant Life Fellowship, 1501 S County Road 3, Pierson. Reverend Jesse Roland will officiate. Burial will follow at
Barberville Midway Cemetery. Allen-Summerhill DeLand is in charge.
